STONY POINT - Robert and Jan Smith's son is a junior at Suffern High School, and right now they're working hard to find a college that will fit him. The fact that their son has Asberger's Syndrome - a high-functioning form of autism - means that their search has to include a school that can handle a child with a difference. That's why they were among the nearly 150 people attending a conference yesterday that focused on helping children with special needs make the transition from public school to the world at large. "One of the things most parents don't do is homework," said Robert Smith. "Like our children get homework, we also have to do homework, and that's what this is all about." "Positive Partnerships, Effective Advocacy" was held yesterday at the Stony Point Conference Center - the sixth conference designed to help parents and others who work with special-needs children navigate the world between school- and community-based programs.
