Flanked by lawmakers from both parties, Rex said he will push for legislation that would give parents greater flexibility in finding a public school. Rex's announcement upstaged — by a day — veteran lawmakers who say they will unveil today their own school choice initiative, which includes private schools. The transition to a public-school choice system would take three years. Pilot programs to test policies and procedures to allow students to move from one district to another would be in place for the 2007-08 school year. How much would his ideas cost long term? Rex could not say.

Baxter Single Parent Scholarship winners

Arkansas State University Mountain Home students who received Baxter Single Parent Scholarships for the spring semester are (from left) Elizabeth Watson, Lisa Bennett, Ann Gee, Cindy Barnes, and Erica Roth. Deer Ridge Elementary School parents have tasked themselves with raising $150,000 to replace a 17-year-old wooden playground they say doesn't comply with state or federal safety guidelines. "If you can imagine what a deck would look like on the back of your house with 500 kids playing on it every day, it gets a little wear and tear," said Kathy O'Shaughnessy, one of two parents coordinating the fundraising effort. Southwest Allen County Schools is giving the school $50,000, which barely covers the cost of the structure. It doesn't cover shipping, installation, groundwork or landscaping.

Parents sue children for maintenance

FINALLY, 75-YEAR-OLD Parvati Parab can meet her son, thanks to a court order. "I wanted to know what faults I had committed in bringing him up that he should behave this way with me," she says. Parab had fought a two-year-long battle in the family court to win a Rs 4,000 a month compensation from her son. At the Mumbai Family Court, this is not an isolated incident. Lawyers are flooded with cases filed by parents against their sons and daughters. We want to experience new things like having a boyfriend/girlfriend and being independent. There are so many things out there that influence us in a bad or good way. At college nearly half the population experience problems with there parents for a number of reasons. This could be such things as being overprotected, being too strict or simply because their parents don't want to accept that their little baby is all grown up and has it's own life to live. NowIi know some of the things us teenagers ask for, parents don't want to give, for example getting a car or staying out late. They may say no because for one they can't afford a car and for your own safety but that's no reason to suddenly hate your parents.

Parents pull tot from class in knife case

PLAINFIELD -- Plainfield School Board will not take disciplinary action on a kindergartner who threatened a student with a penknife because his parents withdrew him from the district Friday, officials said. On Monday night, the board had originally planned on voting whether to expel the boy who attended Charles Reed Elementary School in Joliet. On Dec. 5, while on the school bus the boy allegedly opened a penknife and used threatening language to another student. A third student received a minor cut, less than a paper cut -- from touching the knife blade. State law requires that any student who brings a weapon to school must be expelled for at least one year, but gives the superintendent and the school board latitude to consider circumstances in making the decision.

Single Parent Scholarship Fund Draws Support

FAYETTEVILLE -- Diane Aday took the microphone with some trepidation, dismissing her public speaking skills as less than polished."Don't grade me on anything, please," the college student said. Elopura Assemblyman Au Kam Wah issued the advice Tuesday in the wake of the drowning incident at Sungai Kebun Cina 3, off Mile Four Jalan Utara a day earlier that claimed the life of an 11-year-old boy. The incident should not have happened, especially when it had been raining since early in the morning, he said. The victim Shaharul Nizam went to the river with several friends and was swept away by the strong currents. His body was found three hours later under a bridge. Meanwhile, Au said the heavy downpour at 5pm also resulted in flash floods in areas at Mile 1 1/2 Jalan Utara and mudslide at Taman Sentosa where a portion of the road leading to Jalan Bukit collapsed due to the underground soil movement.

Goodfellows helps unemployed single parent

An unemployed, single parent might have a hard time finding a way from keeping the space under her familys Christmas tree from being empty. Hundreds of parents and guardians voiced their opposition to the plans after they were sent a document outlining the scheme to build just one super-school. In a devastating blow to Diocese chiefs only 30 people were in favour of the scheme, with nearly 850 against or undecided. Now education bosses are being told to go back to the drawing board in their efforts to re-structure Catholic education in the city. They had wanted to close down St Joseph's Catholic College in Manningham, St Bede's Grammar School in Heaton and Yorkshire Martyrs Catholic College in Tong, and replace them with a single super-school by 2008.

Smith heroic as struggling single parent

Directed by Gabriele Muccino. Dedicated and supportive of their children's love for the game, these parents are happy to get up before the sun on their only days off and spend part of their mornings at a chilly hockey rink, warming their hands against a hot double double and cheering on their children. These parents should be commended. They are committed — emotionally and financially — to the game and their children. They cheer the victories and console when things don't go the team's way. As with anything, there are those who take things too far. And while Tyson’s life has been chaotic — to say the least — she is getting back on her feet and doing well. Robert is now 1, and Tyson has a furnished apartment, a part-time job and full custody of the two children. What she doesn’t have is enough money to buy Christmas presents for her children. .

Workshop helps Rockland parents find programs for older teens with ...

STONY POINT - Robert and Jan Smith's son is a junior at Suffern High School, and right now they're working hard to find a college that will fit him. The fact that their son has Asberger's Syndrome - a high-functioning form of autism - means that their search has to include a school that can handle a child with a difference. That's why they were among the nearly 150 people attending a conference yesterday that focused on helping children with special needs make the transition from public school to the world at large. "One of the things most parents don't do is homework," said Robert Smith. "Like our children get homework, we also have to do homework, and that's what this is all about." "Positive Partnerships, Effective Advocacy" was held yesterday at the Stony Point Conference Center - the sixth conference designed to help parents and others who work with special-needs children navigate the world between school- and community-based programs.

Single Parent Scholarship board names new officers

The Arkansas County Single Parent Scholarship Fund met to discuss the distribution of scholarships during 2006, conducting a letter writing campaign and the election of officers and board members at noon, Wednesday, Nov. 15 in the Community Room of the Arkansas County Bank in DeWitt."We had 11 scholarship recipients in the spring and 12 recipients in the all of 2006," Carolyn Turner, vice chancellor of PCUAA-DeWitt campus, said. And sometimes, that balancing act falls apart as it did in last Saturday's fight at Kennedy Arena in Rome during a youth hockey game. According to Sauquoit Valley volleyball coach Darleen Philpotts, parents can lose perspective on what youth sports are all about. "It used to be the dream of the child," said Philpotts, whose three boys play soccer. "Now it's the dream of the parent." Spectators in youth sports can run the gamut of emotions in just one game and have to harness all of those feelings into one shining exemplar for the watchful eyes of not only their child, but the rest of the attentive public.

Parents told they can't help own child unless they get criminal ...

PARENTS of a boy who suffers from a form of autism are taking their council to court after they were banned from helping him on board his school bus. But the student's mother, who cannot be identified for legal reasons, said her daughter repeatedly denied there was anything untoward about the relationship before she finally asked for help. The 26-year-old teacher appeared in the Beenleigh Magistrates Court today for the second day of a committal hearing. The teacher has been charged with 229 counts of indecent dealing with a young student over a two year period starting in 2003 when the alleged victim was 13 years old. The mother of the now 17-year-old student told the court that the teacher would sleep at their house in her daughter's bedroom at least once a week, and that she even went on a family holiday to the Gold Coast with them.

ESRB, PTA seek to educate parents on game ratings

With the efficacy of the video game ratings system such a hot topic among politicians and demagogues, the video game industry continues to fight back. The latest effort comes the Entertainment Software Rating Board, the entity responsible for handing out video game ratings. In a joint press release, the ESRB and the Parent Teacher Association announced a new educational campaign targeted at parents. The aim of the campaign is to better educate parents about the video game ratings system and the type of content that games of a particular rating may contain. To that end, the PTA will be distributing 1.3 million brochures to 26,000 local PTA chapters nationwide, which will in turn be given to parents. Along with a list of the video game ratings used by the ESRB, the educational brochure contains a handy list of the ESRB content descriptors and definitions.

High schools ask parents for homework pledge

CHARLOTTE, N.C. Parents of students at four Charlotte high schools are being asked to sign a pledge that they'll be involved in their children's education. The pledge is part of the district's effort to raise scores at the troubled schools. A Wake County judge has threatened to close those schools and about a dozen more if performance doesn't improve. It's the outcome of a long-running lawsuit over funding for schools in poor districts. Among other things, the pledge asks parents to make sure kids get to school on time, monitor homework and communicate with teachers. Some parents said they don't mind the contract. But others at a meeting this week said they found it condescending. They also felt it singled out schools that serve low-income, minority students. As it has done since its inception earlier this year, the function gave some of Jamaica's youth leaders an opportunity to give their views on problems facing their country, as well as possible solutions. Governor-General Professor Kenneth Hall and ICWI's Dennis Lalor, who was the moderator, heard high school and tertiary-level students speak on issues from drug abuse among youth to the effects of growing up in single parent homes. But here I'll skip over the lead-up, and go straight to taking on the universal belief about dating after divorce: a new relationship shouldn't be introduced to kids until it's really ''serious.'' Check out all the divorce books, magazines and online advice -- this one is written in stone. As a divorced mom, I'm raising four young kids on my own. Fortunately, I have wise friends who have helped me to see that the ''experts'' just don't make sense. The universal fear is that children will get attached to a new friend in Mom's life, and then that new friend will be gone. Can't have that, the thinking goes. Why not? As long as Mom is dating good and worthy men and is not being sexually intimate with them, what's the problem? Kids have great adults going in and out of their lives all the time -- teachers, pastors, parents' friends.

Single-Parent Adoption vs Gay Adoption

In most countries, single-parent adoption is legal, but regulated, while gay adoption is banned. To circumvent the regulations, same-sex couples wishing to adopt overseas typically have one partner file as a single parent. Think of it as a don't-ask-don't-tell policy. But if you are an officially-married gay couple, hey tough luck! Your best bet would be to adopt a child from your home country. The China Center of Adoption Affairs (CCAA) says in a post on its website dated Oct. 2005 that homosexuals cannot adopt children from China because "the China Mental Disorder Classification and Diagnosis Standard classifies homosexuality as sexual obstruction, belonging to psychiatric disease". As far as Shanghaiist understands, that isn't true. China declassified homosexuality as a psychiatric disorder in 2001.

Pretoria school is a gangland - parents

Lyttelton Manor High School is becoming a "gangland", according to concerned parents. Victoria Police Detective Acting Inspector Simon Clemence of the sexual crimes unit said police were today arranging the interviews. "We have three parents that have contacted us so far and have asked us to come and have their boys interviewed and we're in the process of facilitating that right now," he said. Det Clemence said he was not surprised the parents had been forthcoming to police. "I'm not surprised at all actually - I think that the parents are doing what any normal parent would do in the circumstances," he said. "They're obviously quite upset at what's occurred and they're fairly anxious to try and establish what exactly the circumstances are." NSW parliament was last night debating a bill presented by Community Services Minister Reba Meagher that would allow authorities to remove a child from parents who had previously abused a sibling. Under the reform, these parents would need to prove to a court why they should be able to keep their other children. "The burden of proof will be on the parents to demonstrate that the risk of harm has been removed," Ms Meagher said. "These changes are about ensuring that we can deliver a standard of protection immediately for those children that are born to deadbeat parents." Premier Morris Iemma told parliament he was "not prepared to find out the hard way" about cases where children had been hurt or killed after a sibling had been removed by authorities.

New project to keep addicted parents from losing kids

Hoping to keep adults who abuse drugs and alcohol from losing their children, state officials announced a new project Tuesday aimed at treating substance abuse among parents in child abuse and neglect cases. It is a horrendous problem throughout Kentucky, Tom Emberton Jr., commissioner of state social services, told a crowd gathered at the Bridges of Hope Neighborhood Place in Louisville. State officials say 8 of 10 Kentucky children removed from homes lived with adults involved in substance abuse. The state is awarding nearly $1 million to nine communities about $335,000 to Jefferson County for the program called START (Sobriety Treatment and Recovery Team) and other services aimed at helping families affected by substance abuse. It will rely on teams that will work through local drug courts to help parents recover from substance abuse so they wont lose their children to state care.

Indigenous parents slam welfare agencies for removing children

The Northern Territory's child welfare agencies have been criticised at a public forum for not informing Aboriginal parents before taking their children into protective custody. A number of parents at last night's forum said their children were taken whilst at school and they were now only allowed access for one or two hours a week. Parents also complained about a lack of support from welfare agencies and said their efforts to improve as parents were ignored. Many readily admitted to serious family problems. But some, like mother Ravell Netwon, say the Family and Community Services Department has ignored her successful completion of parenting courses. "It has been documented, but the departments aren't bringing it forward on my behalf for a positive output, I guess," she said.

Judge concerned about Hinckley's elderly parents

WASHINGTON - A federal judge signaled his desire Monday to re-examine conditions for presidential assailant John W. Hinckley Jr.'s visits to his parents' home near Williamsburg, Va., citing the advancing age of the elderly couple. The man who shot President Reagan and three others in 1981 - and was found not guilty by reason of insanity - has completed at least seven visits to his parents' home in the upscale resort community of Kingsmill in Virginia, lawyers confirmed in court Monday. While those visits were considered successful, Hinckley's father no longer serves as custodian of his son because of the elder Hinckley's fragile health, prosecutors said. Hinckley's mother, who recently turned 80, now has sole custody during the visits, each of which is of four nights' duration, according to prosecutors and Barry Levine, Hinckley's longtime attorney.
